Top 10 Interesting Facts About Pyramids

The Pyramids of Giza, Egypt. Image Credit - Merkur*Think you know all there is to know about these goliaths of the ancient world? Heritage Key picks out ten key facts about pyramids.
1. There are actually 118 pyramids in Egypt. Sure, you might have heard of Khufu's, or Khafre's – or even Djoser's incredible Step Pyramid at Saqqara, the first known pyramid ever built. But what about the ones which don't grab the headlines: Amenemhat III's Black Pyramid of Dashur looks more like Ayer's Rock than an Egyptian tomb, and Sahure's fine mausoleum in Abusir once stood 47m high.
2. The 118th pyramid was unearthed by Egypt's most famous archaeologist Zahi Hawass, as he and his team uncovered the 4,300-year-old tomb of the 6th Dynasty queen Sesheshet in November last year. The team had been searching for the impressive Old Kingdom pyramid for over two years, and it's the third known 'subsidiary' tomb of Sesheshet's husband, Pharaoh Teti.
Pyramid of Djedefre, Egypt. Image Credit - AhlyMan3. Millions of people know about the Giza necropolis, but have you ever heard of the Pyramid of Djedefre? This largely ruined pyramid Egypt's northernmost, and was commissioned by the son of Khufu, the pharaoh who constructed the largest pyramid in the world. Some have speculated that it was once as tall as Menkaure's pyramid, the third largest of the great triumvirate at Giza.
4. Khufu's Great Pyramid may be, well, great - but it's also the only surviving ancient wonder of the world, and the oldest at around 4,600 years old. Other staggering numbers for the monument are that it includes 2.3 million limestone blocks and weighs 5.9 million tonnes. Oh, and it held the title of tallest man-made structure for around 4,000 years at 146m, until Lincoln Cathedral (160m) surpassed it in 1311.
According to Herodotus, 100,000 people built Khufu's Great Pyramid - more than the population of any city at the time
5. Staying on Khufu's masterpiece, up to 100,000 labourers built the behemoth according to Greek historian Herodotus. This is more than the entire population of the world's biggest cities at the time, and many think Herodotus may have been a bit overexcited - he was going on the words of friends; and lived almost 2,000 years after the pyramid was built. Modern experts place the number nearer 20,000 – still a large enough number of builders in one place.
6. Even the builders had tombs: When an American tourist was thrown from her horse in Giza in 1990, a stone the horse stumbled on turned out to be the tip of an enormous builders' necropolis. Zahi Hawass' team would subsequently unearth over 600 tombs. One of them, the 'egg dome' tomb, is now an attraction in its own right.
The Bent Pyramid, Egypt. Image Credits - a rancid amoeba7. One of King Sneferu's three pyramids, at the royal necropolis of Dashur, is significantly bent from around halfway up at a shallower angle. It creates a unique shape for the empire, and experts think it may have been done simply because the existing angle began to weaken the building. Other think it may have been hurried, as Sneferu's death was approaching. Its name today? The Bent Pyramid, of course.
8. Pyramid building spread southwards in the later years of Egypt's cultural zenith: just look at the Nile-based Kushite capital of Meroe, located some hundred miles north-east of Khartoum, Sudan. Its own beautiful network of small, steep pyramids was created between the 4th century BC and 3rd century AD. Kushite kings ruled Egypt throughout its 25th Dynasty.

9. Pyramids don't stop at the Sahara. The step pyramids of the Mayas in Central America are some of the world's most recognisable and breath-taking mad-made monuments, and recent years have seen the alleged 'discovery' of an Mayan Pyramid, Chichen Itza. Image Credit - Mananetworkalternative Valley of the Pyramids in Bosnia. If deemed to be a pyramid, the Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun would become the largest such structure of the ancient world, eclipsing Khufu's opus by some way.
10. The excavation of pyramids doesn't stop with dusty shirts and beaten trowels – robots are making some of the biggest strides in Egypt today. A Japanese model has been searching inside the Osiris shaft below Khafre's pyramid, whereas a University of Leeds-developed 'RoboScarab' (copyright Ann) is making its way through the mysterious shafts of Khufu's Great Pyramid.

Top 10 Tips and Tricks to Train, Exercise, and Better Your Brain

Top 10 Tips and Tricks to Train, Exercise, and Better Your BrainWhile we're always using our brains, we're not necessarily doing much to keep them in good shape. Here are the top ten sites and tools to train your brain and exercise your mental muscles.

top 10 Fitness Tips and Tools

Top 10 Fitness Tips and ToolsYou can do a lot with your mind and a computer, but a healthy and honed body will get you even more out of life (if only more of it). Here are our favorite tips and tools for staying in shape.

10. Stay Fit Despite the Summer Heat

Top 10 Fitness Tips and ToolsEven if you're motivated enough to actually get out the door when it's hot out, you might not be doing your body any favors by treating a scorcher like any other day. Try drinking a slushie (a great excuse if we've ever heard one), avoid falling for hydration myths, and stay in shape despite the heat. Photo by avlxyz.

9. Stay Working Out in Winter

Top 10 Fitness Tips and ToolsIf there's anything worse for workout willpower than the summer heat, it's the deep cold of winter. But take heart: the average blast of cold air can't hurt your lungs, and if you take the right precautions, slippery roads and even bronchial symptoms can be overcome in a cold run. If you're the biking type, but find the passing wind and conditions far too cold, take seriously avid cyclist (and MetaFilter founder) Matt Haughey's advice on tips and equipment for winter cycling.

8. Try a New Fitness Plan

Ever heard of shovelgloving? The Couch to 5K plan? Maybe you've heard some more gym-rat friends discuss interval training? Switching up your routine, using new tools, and picking up a different fitness plan can stretch your body and skills in helpful ways that don't require a whole new set of gym equipment to get started.

7. Use the Marine Corps Test to Gauge Your Fitness

Top 10 Fitness Tips and ToolsCan you pull off 20 pull-ups, 100 crunches, and a three-mile run in under 18 minutes, within the same two-hour span? Congratulations, you just scored 100 on the Marine Corps Fitness Test. If not, you're in good company, and you can use the points of the armed forces to keep track of your fitness. (Note: The crunches scoring conflicts with other advice to avoid them, but you can swap in push-ups for a similar upper-and-mid-body test).

6. Go Barefoot, or Just Skip Expensive Running Shoes

Top 10 Fitness Tips and ToolsYou might just think of shoes as a fancy cover for your foot, but people run very differently in shoes than barefoot. What's more, running barefoot isn't just a natural kick—it's usually better than wearing expensive, engineered running shoes. There's more to it than just kicking off your shoes, of course. Leo Babuta of the Zen Habits blog has a wealth of advice on barefoot running, as do the experts interviewed by Science Daily. One halfway solution is a barely-there shoe like the Vibram FiveFingers, but our readers are definitely divided on it. In any case, consider that it's the foot, not the shoe, that does the running.

5. Get in Shape with Little or No Equipment

Top 10 Fitness Tips and ToolsYou think that if you drop $1,500 on that elliptical machine, you'll be honor-bound to spend some serious hours on it. But it doesn't work that way. Instead, try some of the no-equipment roster of fitness moves explained by the Zen Habits blog, or a similar set of no-stuff-needed workouts

4. Track and Train with Great Mobile Apps

Top 10 Fitness Tips and ToolsIf you don't mind bringing your smartphone with you while you're working out, you can do a lot more with it than just listen to music. Apps like RunKeeper, CardioTrainer, and other great mobile fitness apps can serve as great motivators, as they show you exactly how much further you're going, how long it's taking, and how far you're covering every time you head out. (RunKeeper, by the way, is our readers' favorite.)

3. Create the Ultimate Workout Playlist

Top 10 Fitness Tips and ToolsCreating the right soundtrack for your run, bike, or other exercise is part art, part science. You can read up what the New York Times' interview experts have to say, but you can also use some tools and techniques to pick out the right pace. Having great, high-energy music won't make you a marathon runner, but it can keep you moving toward the finish line with determination. Our readers also offered up their own takes on the best workout music.

2. Trade Static Stretching for Dynamic Warm-Ups

Top 10 Fitness Tips and ToolsForget what your gym teacher told you—touching your toes, bending at the waist, and other exercises that stretch your muscles don't help much, if at all, according to a study of thousands of runners of all ages. Instead, try gradually moving up from a fast walk to a run, swinging your arms and legs a bit, and other dynamic stretches before you head out. Photo by lululemon athletica.

1. Stick with Push Ups for Overall Fitness

Top 10 Fitness Tips and ToolsHow can something as old-school as a push up—hands on the ground, knees off the floor, and push—still be in use, and even be growing in acceptance? Because it works out your whole body, it's better on your back than crunches, and you can use your raw push up count as a graduated curve toward fitness, as with the Hundred Push Ups program. Some things about getting in shape never get tired

Top 10 home hair colour tips

Top 10 home hair colour tips

Top 10 home hair colour tips
You just can't beat the convenience and budget advantages of home hair colouring—unless you somehow give yourself green or orange hair and have to run screeching to a salon for a rescue-911. Happily, that's unlikely to happen. Home-colour formulas have improved and the companies who make them have expert online step-by-step and video tips as well as toll-free help lines in place for consumers. To get you started on the road to perfect home hair colour, here's our list of top tips.

1. Think quality and quantity

If you have super-thick or super-long hair, pick up two boxes of hair colour so you have the extra on hand in case you discover halfway through that you don't have enough.

2. Take precautions if you're expecting

"Despite the cautioning, there are expectant mothers out there who just don't want to give up their hair colour," says Christopher Martin, colourist and co-owner at Shagg Salon in Toronto and consultant for Clairol Canada. He advises using an ammonia-free formula, or going with highlights, because highlighting colour doesn't touch the scalp.

3. Know your limits

Want to make a big change? Note that you can't go from brunette to blonde in one step. "A box colour won't significantly lighten previously dyed hair," says Nicole Dupuis, technical manager for L'Oréal Canada. If you do want to make such a change, she adds, "you need a specific lightening kit designed to bleach colour out."

4. Assemble your backup team

If you're uncertain how to proceed, you're starting with very dry or damaged hair, or you're trying something new, call your chosen brand's toll-free help line or hit the related website for tips before you begin. They can help with a myriad of issues, from choosing a hair colour formula to counteracting brassy blond tones.

5. Do your homework

"Read the instructions very carefully," insists Eric Del Monaco, official hair artist and colourist for L'Oréal Paris Canada and stylist at O Sole Salon & Spa in Toronto. Hey, read them twice (they're important!), and follow them faithfully. The package insert will tell you everything you need to know, such as how to do a proper strand test (using the hair at the nape of your neck, Del Monaco emphasizes)—and why you shouldn't skip it!

6. Wash your hair a day or two before

"You need the natural oils on your scalp to protect it," says Dupuis—so let your hair get a little dirty before you dye. "Don't comb or brush vigorously before colouring either," she adds. "You don't want to start with an irritated scalp." If you're a swimmer, use a lot of styling products in your hair or have been colouring for a long time and your hair lacks shine, consider using a clarifying shampoo a couple of times leading up to the week you want to colour.

7. Hydrate extra-dry hair

Dry, brittle hair is more porous than healthy hair and absorbs colour more readily. A strand test is a big must so you know how long it'll take to develop the shade you want, but also consider deep-conditioning hair beforehand. (Yes, you still have to do the strand test on your hair afterward, ideally 48 hours before you plan to colour.)

8. Let your inner neat-freak take control

"Be as tidy as possible," says Del Monaco. "The neater and more orderly you are, the less likely you are to make mistakes, and the better your results will be." Del Monaco also suggests being methodical about the process. For example, make a sketch on paper of the pattern you want for highlights before getting started.

9. Maximize new colour with the right hair care products

Start by not shampooing within 24 hours of colouring; washing immediately will wash out some of the colour, too. Instead, notes Martin, "A lot of my clients like to use the enclosed deep conditioner as a treatment post colour." For the best results, he says, instead of immediately rinsing out the conditioner, wrap your hair in plastic, use your blow-dryer for about five minutes to heat it up (from a safe distance!), then leave your hair wrapped, with the conditioner still on, for another 20 minutes.
And when it comes to daily products, adds Del Monaco, "Take care of your new colour with the right shampoo and conditioner." Use colour-friendly shampoo and conditioner and deep-condition weekly to help lock colour in. To boost fading colour, try colour-enhancing shampoo/conditioner or a rinse-out colour treatment.

10. Know when to think outside the box—that is, hit the salon instead

Although it's possible to handle almost any colour situation at home, sometimes it's more efficient—and effective—to let salon experts take control. Such situations include drastic colour changes, such as going from dark brunette to pale blonde as well as going from pale blonde to brunette (you don't want green hair!); starting with already overprocessed, damaged hair; and fixing dye disasters. Sometimes, peace of mind equals piece of wallet.
If you do go ahead with a DIY dye, after all that effort don't forget to tip your fabulous home colourist—that's you—for a job well done. And yes, let all those compliments go to your head.

10 tips to prevent hair loss

  1. No hair pulling - when you pull your hair you put strain on the follicle and this can result in permanent damage and the follicle no longer being able to grow again.
  2. No scalp rubbing - when you towel dry your hair be careful not to rub the scalp and damage your hair follicles. It's much better to pat the extra moisture away rather than rub.
  3. No wigs - unless your doctor has prescribed the use of a wig you should avoid it because your scalp isn't able to breath properly and the wig quite literally suffocates your follicles.
  4. The right shampoo - is important to your hair health. You might be surprised to find out that there really is scientific value in the shampoo you buy. To get the most for your money match it up to your hair type.
  5. No colorants or perms - both can lead to damage to your scalp and your hair follicles leaving them not able to support hair growth any longer.
  6. Wash thoroughly - your shampoo has soap and chemicals that can damage your hair and ruin your scalp if you do not rinse your hair properly.
  7. Avoid greasy foods - Your hair is a good way to analyze your health. Scientist's believe that just one strand of hair can be tested and tell if person is taking drugs, or if you are allergic to any foods. The old saying that you are what you eat is really quite true. Avoiding greasy food is good for your overall health and certainly your hair.
  8. Avoid sunburn to the scalp - and to the body for that matter. We all know how serious sunburn can be to our overall health and sunburn to the scalp can cause the follicle to be unable to produce hair because of the sunburn.
  9. Wash the sea out - or the chlorine for that matter. Washing your hair will get rid of the salt and chlorine and keep your scalp protected not lending damage to the hair follicles.
  10. Laser comb - there are more new technologies on the market that are designed to slow the effects of hair loss, especially in men. The Androhair laser comb is one of those technologies.
These 10 tips will help you keep your hair healthy and help you prevent hair loss. So why wait another day? Why risk the loss of hair when prevention is always the best medicine.

Top 10 Tips Visa Application Tips

  1. Ties to Home Country: Under US law, all applicants for nonimmigrant visas are viewed as intending immigrants until they can convince the consular officer that they are not. You must therefore be able to show that you have reasons for returning to your home country that are stronger than those for remaining in the United States. "Ties" to your home country are the things that bind you to your hometown, homeland, or current place of residence: job, family, financial prospects that you own or will inherit, investments, etc. If you are a prospective undergraduate, the interviewing officer may ask you about your specific intentions or promise of future employment, family or other relationships, educational objectives, grades, long-range plans, and career prospects in your home country. Each person's situation is different, of course, and there is no magic explanation or single document, certificate, or letter which can guarantee visa issuance.
  2. English: Anticipate that the interview will be conducted in English and not in your native language. One suggestion is to practice English conversation with a native speaker before the interview. If you are coming to the United States solely to study intensive English, be prepared to explain how English will be useful for you in your home country.
  3. Speak for Yourself: Do not bring parents or family members with you to the interview. The consular officer wants to interview you, not your family. A negative impression is created if you are not prepared to speak on your own behalf. If you are a minor applying for a high school program and need your parents there in case there are questions, for example, about funding, they should wait in the waiting room.
  4. Know the Program and How it Fits Your Career Plans: If you are not able to articulate the reasons you will study in a particular program in the United States, you may not succeed in convincing the consular officer that you are indeed planning to study, rather than to immigrate. You should also be able to explain how studying in the United States relates to your future professional career when you return home.
  5. Be Concise: Because of the volume of applications received, all consular officers are under considerable time pressure to conduct a quick and efficient interview. They must make a decision, for the most part, on the impressions they form during the first minute or two of the interview. Consequently, what you say first and the initial impression you create are critical to your success. Keep your answers to the officer's questions short and to the point.
  6. Supplemental Documentation: It should be clear at a glance to the consular officer what written documents you are presenting and what they signify. Lengthy written explanations cannot be quickly read or evaluated. Remember that you will have 2-3 minutes of interview time, if you're lucky.
  7. Not All Countries are Equal: Applicants from countries suffering economic problems or from countries where many students have remained in the United States as immigrants will have more difficulty getting visas. Statistically, applicants from those countries are more likely to be intending immigrants. They are also more likely to be asked about job opportunities at home after their study in the United States.
  8. Employment: Your main purpose of coming to the United States should be to study, not for the chance to work before or after graduation. While many students do work off-campus during their studies, such employment is incidental to their main purpose of completing their US education. You must be able to clearly articulate your plan to return home at the end of your program. If your spouse is also applying for an accompanying F-2 visa, be aware that F-2 dependents cannot, under any circumstances, be employed in the United States. If asked, be prepared to address what your spouse intends to do with his or her time while in the United States. Volunteer work and attending school part-time are permitted activities.
  9. Dependents Remaining at Home: If your spouse and children are remaining behind in your country, be prepared to address how they will support themselves in your absence. This can be an especially tricky area if you are the primary source of income for your family. If the consular officer gains the impression that your family members will need you to remit money from the United States in order to support themselves, your student visa application will almost certainly be denied. If your family does decide to join you at a later time, it is helpful to have them apply at the same post where you applied for your visa.
  10. Maintain a Positive Attitude: Do not engage the consular officer in an argument. If you are denied a student visa, ask the officer for a list of documents he or she would suggest you bring in order to overcome the refusal, and try to get the reason you were denied in writing.

Top 10 Tips for Maintaining a Positive Attitude

be positiveHaving and maintaining a positive attitude is vital for success in life and business. Zig Ziglar gets it right when he says, "It is your attitude, not your aptitude, that determines your altitude." Sure you need skills, but you can learn skills - in fact a positive attitude will make it much more likely that you will learn the skills necessary to succeed. If you take two people with an equal skill set the person with the better attitude will win.

Unfortunately it is not always easy to stay positive and keep a good attitude. As things go wrong throughout your day, it is easy to let negative thoughts start to take over. Thankfully there are many things that you can do to help maintain a positive attitude. These are things that you can do on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis to make sure you keep your positive focus.
  1. Read Positive and Inspiring Books
One of the best ways to maintain a positive attitude is by reading positive books. These books serve to encourage you, inspire you, and teach you. Reading requires that you sit still and focus, and by focusing on something positive it helps you to keep a positive mindset throughout the day.
  2. Listen to Podcasts/CDS
The advantage of listening to podcasts or compact disks is that you can listen on the go. You can listen to motivating podcasts while you clean your house, exercise, or on a flight. In your car, you can play encouraging compact disks that help you make better use of your commute. Listening to recordings from people like Zig Ziglar, Tony Robbins, or John Maxwell can both teach and inspire you.
  3. Wake up Early
One of the best ways to help you maintain a positive attitude is to create the habit of waking up early. Waking up early allows you to get a head start on the day. You can prepare for work and start your day without feeling rushed. You can get a head start on important projects before the rest of the world is awake to interrupt you. You can spend time reading or in prayer or meditation. I start each day by listening to a 10 minute motivational podcast.
  4. Exercise
Very few things in life leverage your time as much as exercise. Obviously it makes a difference for your physical health, but it also has significant benefits to your mental health. Exercise is useful to combat depression and to improve overall positive mood. Further, if you exercise early in the morning you can go through your day knowing that you have already completed the most valuable activity you had to do!
  5. Plan Your Week and Day
Having a clear plan to your day and to your week can go a long way to helping you maintain a positive attitude. By knowing what you want to accomplish you will be able to focus on your important life priorities. A weekly plan allows you to match your long-term goals to your weekly accomplishments. Your daily plan allows you complete the activities you need to do so that you meet your weekly goals. (My weekly planning process can be found here.)
  6. Understand that Things Won't Always Go as Planned
If you plan and expect everything in life will go as you planned, you will be quickly disappointed. One of the keys to maintaining a positive attitude is to understand that things will go wrong. If you expect things to go wrong, you won't be phased when they do. So have a plan, but understand that things won't follow the plan. The plan allows you to adapt to what went wrong and move back towards what is important.
  7. St. John's Wort and Griffonia Seed
These two herbal supplements can have an important role to play in helping you maintain a positive attitude. St. John's Wort is really a mood stabilizer. Griffonia seed works to elevate positive mood. Together they are helpful in maintaining a positive mental attitude.
  8. Get Spiritually Connected
Naturally this one will look different for everyone, and this is simply an option to consider. If you are spiritually connected, you will have a positive outlook on life. This might mean prayer, meditation or reading Scripture. Set aside time each day to be connected spiritually.
  9. Be Thankful
Take some time and be thankful. Be thankful about what you have, who you are, and what your life is like. Think through all of the things that you can be thankful for. Even if you are in a tough time in life there are many things you have that you can be thankful for. You need to look for them and recognize them. The very act of focusing on what you are thankful for will help you maintain your positive attitude
  10. Surround Yourself with Positive People
The people around you have a big impact on you. They impact who you are, how much money you will make, and what you value. They also impact how you think. If you surround yourself with negative people you will be negative as well. You can't help it. Hearing negativity all day leads you to negativity. The opposite is also true. Surround yourself with positive people and you will be more positive.

Top 10 Tips for Taking College Exams

10 Things to Remember on the Day of your Exam

  1. Arrive early. Make sure you know the location and time of your exam. Get there early to give yourself enough time to settle down before the exam starts.
  2. Be awake for the test. Ideally, getting a good night’s rest is always encouraged before an exam; however, realistically, we all know that can’t always happen. Other options are to shower in the morning, chew gum, to have a caffeinated drink. Always be cautious when consuming caffeinated drinks, you don’t want to be jittery for the test.
  3. Eat a small breakfast. You’ll want to minimize any possible distractions during the test. It’ll be more difficult to concentrate if you’re hungry. Don’t eat anything that may upset your stomach.
  4. Bring extra writing utensils. You never know when your pencil’s going to break or run out of lead or your pen’s going to run out of ink.
  5. Bring all essential test materials. There’s nothing worse than forgetting to bring a calculator or notes to an exam. Professors usually won’t have extras or allow you to share with another classmate.
  6. Go to the bathroom. Self-explanatory. This is another precaution to minimize distractions during the test.
  7. Wear comfortable clothes. You’ll want to be comfortable taking the test. Popular choices are sweatpants and hoodies.
  8. Bring any necessities. Bring a water bottle, tissues, cough drops, etc.
  9. Look over your notes. Review important information again before the test to refresh your memory.
  10. It’s just a test. Remember that you studied hard and have confidence in yourself.

10 tips for better sleep

10 tips for better sleep

If you're having trouble sleeping, change your sleep habits for a better night's

Feeling crabby lately? It could be you aren't getting enough sleep. Work, household responsibilities and child care can make sleep difficult to come by. Factor in other unexpected challenges, such as financial worries, layoffs, relationship issues or an illness, and quality sleep may be even more elusive.
You may not be able to control or eliminate all of the factors that interfere with your sleep, but you can create an environment and adopt habits that encourage a more restful night. Try these suggestions if you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep:
  1. Go to bed and get up at about the same time every day, even on the weekends. Sticking to a schedule helps reinforce your body's sleep-wake cycle and can help you fall asleep more easily at night.
  2. Don't eat or drink large amounts before bedtime. Eat a light dinner at least two hours before sleeping. If you're prone to heartburn, avoid spicy or fatty foods, which can make your heartburn flare and prevent a restful sleep. Also, limit how much you drink before bed. Too much liquid can cause you to wake up repeatedly during the night for trips to the toilet.
  3. Avoid nicotine, caffeine and alcohol in the evening. These are stimulants that can keep you awake. Smokers often experience withdrawal symptoms at night, and smoking in bed is dangerous. Avoid caffeine for eight hours before your planned bedtime. Your body doesn't store caffeine, but it takes many hours to eliminate the stimulant and its effects. And although often believed to be a sedative, alcohol actually disrupts sleep.
  4. Exercise regularly. Regular physical activity, especially aerobic exercise, can help you fall asleep faster and make your sleep more restful. However, for some people, exercising right before bed may make getting to sleep more difficult.
  5. Make your bedroom cool, dark, quiet and comfortable. Create a room that's ideal for sleeping. Adjust the lighting, temperature, humidity and noise level to your preferences. Use blackout curtains, eye covers, earplugs, extra blankets, a fan or white-noise generator, a humidifier or other devices to create an environment that suits your needs.
  6. Sleep primarily at night. Daytime naps may steal hours from nighttime slumber. Limit daytime sleep to about a half-hour and make it during midafternoon. If you work nights, keep your window coverings closed so that sunlight, which adjusts the body's internal clock, doesn't interrupt your sleep. If you have a day job and sleep at night, but still have trouble waking up, leave the window coverings open and let the sunlight help awaken you.
  7. Choose a comfortable mattress and pillow. Features of a good bed are subjective and differ for each person. But make sure you have a bed that's comfortable. If you share your bed, make sure there's enough room for two. Children and pets are often disruptive, so you may need to set limits on how often they sleep in bed with you.
  8. Start a relaxing bedtime routine. Do the same things each night to tell your body it's time to wind down. This may include taking a warm bath or shower, reading a book, or listening to soothing music. Relaxing activities done with lowered lights can help ease the transition between wakefulness and sleepiness.
  9. Go to bed when you're tired and turn out the lights. If you don't fall asleep within 15 to 20 minutes, get up and do something else. Go back to bed when you're tired. Don't agonize over falling asleep. The stress will only prevent sleep.
  10. Use sleeping pills only as a last resort. Check with your doctor before taking any sleep medications. He or she can make sure the pills won't interact with your other medications or with an existing medical condition. Your doctor can also help you determine the best dosage. If you do take a sleep medication, reduce the dosage gradually when you want to quit, and never mix alcohol and sleeping pills. If you feel sleepy or dizzy during the day, talk to your doctor about changing the dosage or discontinuing the pills.
Nearly everyone has occasional sleepless nights. But if you have trouble sleeping on a regular or frequent basis, see your doctor. You could have a sleep disorder, such as obstructive sleep apnea or restless legs syndrome. Identifying and treating the cause of your sleep disturbance can help get you back on the road to a good night's sleep.

  • Good work starts with good hygiene. Usually guys are careless about personal hygiene but girls are really watchful about this. So, be well-groomed and wear clean clothes to attract your girl.
  • Have a good attitude because girls don’t like guys who flaunt. Be modest and don’t attempt to impress everyone. Guys, slightly inclined towards good humor, are liked by girls.
  • Show respect towards everyone and give them their space; this will fetch your respect from them too. Especially with girls, showing respect works even better.
  • Have healthy conversations and don’t speak too much before girls. Speak in moderation; the other person should not feel that you’re not interested and also don’t speak in excess so that he/she doesn’t get time to speak.
  • Prefer talking on topics of common interest. Girls don’t like guys who talk about themselves only. Show interest in her speech. Ask her about her interests like hobbies, favorite books, music, etc. If she starts asking you about yours, speak briefly and again focus on her interests.
  • Try to flirt. If you both make an eye contact, just pass a smile. Perhaps she will get blushed or start looking away, but don’t react. Remember you don’t have to stare her down. If she likes you, she will definitely give glances.

  • Be romantic, but not in excess. For example, hold her hand while looking in her eyes or get down on your knees to bow her.
  • Start speaking with her casually. If you don’t know the girl, start friendly conversation. Ask for the time, and praise her watch.
  • Make an effort to get her attention to your plus points and away from negative points, remember to be original.
  • Don’t tell her straightaway that you like her. Ask her out. If she refuses, don’t take any tensions. You can change the style and say ‘Oh! Actually we friends are planning to go on a dinner; I thought that you might like to join us”.
  • Don’t get stick to her. Give her some time and like this, you’ll definitely get her attention.

Using Mobile Technologies in the Classroom: 10 Easy Tips to Get Started

Image via Wikipedia
Using mobile technologies to enhance your teaching does not need to be complicated. In fact, some of the easiest ways to use these technologies can improve your communication and relationship with students, enable higher-order thinking in your assignments, engage your learners, and save you quite a bit of time. Here are 10 easy tips to get started:
  1. Twitter to Communicate: Set up separate Twitter (http://twitter.com) accounts for each of your classes. (You will need to have different email addresses for each Twitter account). Tell your students how to follow your class account on Twitter and show them how to enable mobile alerts on their phones. (I have a handy Twitter tutorial you can adapt for this purpose.) Then, tell them you will use this service to provide important updates, such as if you need to cancel class. Tell them if they set up mobile alerts or check Twitter through an aggregator (try Tweetdeck), they won’t have to drive to a canceled class. Use this system to remind them of important assignment due dates or changes in assignments.
  2. Gmail Chat to Answer Questions and Reduce Email Overload: Tell students to invite you to their Boise State Gmail and contact you when you are online using Gmail chat. Also show them how to install the Voice/Video plugin (http://www.google.com/chat/video) so you can talk. Encourage them to use this instead of email, to quickly answer questions and cut down on the number of emails you need to answer.
  3. Google Voice to preserve your privacy but offer quick communication: Set up a Google Voice number (http://voice.google.com) and provide this to your students instead of your personal cell phone number. You can see who is calling you by enabling Call Screening with Google Voice, so you can decide if you want to answer the call or not. The messages are transcribed in Google Voice, and you can even have them forward to your email or SMS.
  4. Encourage cell phone and laptops in your classroom: Allow your students to freely use mobile devices in the classroom for all kinds of uses: taking instructional videos and sharing them on YouTube, writing notes during class, using Twitter to back-channel discussions during lectures and other presentations, looking up concepts online to answer quick questions, participating in polls, taking pictures of whiteboards for review (try Evernote for this), recording lectures, instant blogging, taking quizzes, taking and uploading pictures, checking the spelling of a word, researching and reporting on new mobile apps, recording a classroom session live using ustream–you get it, the list can go on almost endlessly.
  5. Set up alternative options for attendance in your face-to-face classroom: If students cannot attend your live classes, you can easily set up a web meeting to enhance your classes or now use an iPod Touch and FaceTime to communicate. Tell your students to contact you via SMS if they cannot attend live so you have time to plug them in through mobile devices. Or use ustream’s mobile app to record and stream your classroom meeting.
  6. Show your students how to use RSS to bring media and information to them: If you don’t know, go to our library, where any of the reference librarians can provide training. Have them subscribe to at least 5 blogs or websites that they can follow throughout the semester.
  7. Encourage your students to write to a blog at least once a week on a topic of interest to them: Show them how to use mobile devices to upload and publish content. Direct them to Blogger mobile and show them how easy it is to post from anywhere: http://www.blogger.com/mobile-start.g
  8. Use QR codes to facilitate communication and marketing: Create a QR code for your website and publish that to your business card, course syllabus, office door, or any other location where students might need to get more information about you. Here’s the QR code to our Mobile Learning Syllabus for Summer 1010:
  9. qrcode
  10. Show students how to access and use the mobile version of the Albertsons Library website: http://library.boisestate.edu/m Schedule a session with the library for your class so they can learn how to use this fabulous resource.
  11. Ask your university to offer your LMS in a mobile platform/option: Blackboard and Moodlerooms now have options for mobile conversion of course sites and interactive mobile communication and updates. Keep pushing for more innovation and options for students, who are, after all, our
